From The Aywas Wiki
On September 12, 2010, the Special Edition (also called Raw Crystal) pets were introduced. These new species are neither Ay nor Ara to begin with, and for the first few months of their existence can be made with Raw Crystals of various types. Raw crystals are generally less expensive than their standard orb/crystal counterparts. After two months the species retires to be replaced with a new species, and Raw Crystals are unable to be used to create the retired species. The exception is the Holiday Raw Crystal, which can be used to make any current or retired SE pet.
Originally the old SE pets was voted on by the Aywas public for their permanent placement, to join Ay, Ara or Tokens in the Trash Dump. The voting system was dropped in favor of retirement of the species beginning with the Pilo for two reasons; concern over too many active species, and that all retiring species were being diverted to Tokens due to their low cost.
The first Special Edition pet was the Oske, which remains one of the most popular pets in number of customs submitted. The Oske was voted Ay on November 12, 2010, and the new SE pet, the Quolgarian (usually called the Quol), was introduced to Aywas. The Quol did not have quite the success as the Oske did, and while users continue to make Oske designs after it was the SE pet, there are not as many designers creating Quol designs. After two months, on January 15, 2011, the Quol was voted Ara, and the Bumble became the new SE pet. The Bumble has had mixed praise and rejection, as many users are put off by its odd tongue. It is found that most custom Bumble designers will edit out the tongue however, so it is not hard to find designs without the tongue. The Bumble was overwhelmingly voted Ara, and the Corra and the Chorlu became the new SE pets. Of the two, the wolf-like Corra is definitely more popular. The plates and crystals are commonly removed to make it more natural looking for edited customs. The Chorlu is more difficult to work with, due to it's body shape and pose, but a number of extremely creative uses can be found for its unusual body shape. The Opterix was the last SE species to be voted into Ay/Ara/Tokens. It is popular mostly for dramatic species changes, saving only the wings and maybe the tail, due to the large area and number of lines they take up. The Pilo was the first SE pet to retire, with modest popularity. The Woolith was the species designed by the winners of the July 2011 Scavenger Hunt as part of their team prizes. It was saved from retirement with the use of a Slashbot.
On May 26, 2013 The Plio was voted back by users and placed into the Ara area.
